How to get and keep a balanced life
By Tony Mcgregor
We all of us from time to time feel that our lives are off kilter, out of balance, going nowhere fast. Sometimes we are able to pull ourselves out of these doldrums by our own efforts, and sometimes we just feel that everything is just too much, we need some help. Sometimes, too, even though everything seems OK, at least on the surface, we still have that nagging feeling that there should be more, that life could be fuller and richer. These are times when the help of a professional coach can be of use. Coaches are trained to help people examine their lives, not in the sense of putting right something that's wrong, but in the sense of helping them find their centre of gravity again, helping them get in touch again with their deepest desires and aspirations. There are many models of a balanced life against which to assess your current life situation. The model that I use in my coaching practice is an eight factor one which we call the Life Wheel. The Life Wheel shows the eight factors in the form of a wheel and the idea is that if all the areas are in balance, i.e. that you feel that each area is appropriately developed for you, then the wheel will be perfectly round and so your life will proceed smoothly. However, if any area is not at the level which you would consider optimal for you, then the wheel will not be round and so your progress through life will not be smooth. It will also feel difficult, as its harder to push a wheel if its not perfectly round. The objective of life coaching is to get the wheel back into a perfectly round shape. In order to get a picture of how a client's life wheel looks I would get them to do a life assessment before the first session, and to forward that assessment to me so that I can prepare myself for the session. This assessment would rate the eight factors on a scale from 0 to 10, 0 being close to the centre of the wheel and 10 being on the circumference of the wheel. The first session is free, and there are 12 more sessions, usually at two-weekly intervals, though this can be arranged to suit the client. A typical session would follow a format such as this, though each session will be slightly different: What’s on your mind? What are your expectations of coaching? Life Wheel. How to set great goals. Goal Brainstorming. Writing your goals. What if you don’t reach your goals? Lets go! What have you learnt? The whole 13 session process should be completed within six months, if at all possible. Sessions can be face-to-face or telephonic, usually by means of Skype of Google Chat. The process that is followed is in each session to set goals and milestones to be achieved in some areas of the client's life that need to be brought back into balance, and the in the session I would give the client feedback and suggestions on how to proceed. Before the the session ends there would be a mutual exchange of feedback and the client would set new goals and milestones. The role of the coach is to keep the client focussed on his or her goals by giving appropriate feedback, and then to encourage the client and keep them motivated to achieve their goals, which, after all, are what they have themselves said they want to do to achieve happiness and fulfilment in their lives. |
